The Coeur d’Alene Mining District leads the world
in recorded silver production.

Since lode mining began here in 1884, the mines have produced over :

  • 1.1 billion ounces of silver
  • 8.5 million tons of lead
  • 3.2 million tons of zinc
  • ..and substantial amounts of gold, copper, antimony and cadmium.
  • Total value of these metals is estimated at over $5.4 billion.

More than 90 mines are in the District. Eleven have produced over 3 million tons of ore each.
The district is home to the United States' :

  • largest underground mine -- the Bunker Hill, with over 150 miles of  underground workings
  • deepest mine -- the Star-Morning, over 7,900 feet deep
  • richest silver mine -- the Sunshine, which has produced well over 350 million ounces of silver
